The Birdhouse Museum of Bridgeport is delighted to invite you to the Art On Cardboard 16th Anniversary Reception, at Co-Prosperity Sphere (3219 S. Morgan) on Friday, October 19th, from 6PM to 11PM!

This roundtable conversation featuring Mexican and Mexican American visual artists, lead by artist and ESPAC curator Esteban King, will discuss what Americans miss when they think of Mexican contemporary art and will ask if the hesitation to embrace contemporary art is universal or cultural. Participants include visual artists Edgar Cobián (Guadalajara), Salvador Jiménez-Flores (Chicago), Libia Bianibi (Oaxaca/Chicago), and more.
MAKE Literary Production’s 5th annual Lit & Luz Festival of Language, Literature, and Art, themed "Assembly," is an ambitious exchange between Mexico City and Chicago. The weeklong festival takes place at over a dozen arts venues and universities throughout Chicago, October 13th-20th. The following March, a similar series of events are held in Mexico City. Programs include readings, conversations, and our signature event, the “Live Magazine Show”—which makes its Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago debut this year.
A three-day extravaganza of books, music, and art will feature over 7500 used books, original literary art from 10+ artists and two nights of live, local music.

In 1968 at the national party conventions, William F. Buckley and Gore Vidal—two ideological and personal rivals—debated the issues of the day and traded insults. It was an explosive political spectacle that presaged the culture wars and today's polarized media landscape. Following a short screening, Rick Perlstein (author of "Nixonland") and Modern Age editor Daniel McCarthy will discuss the Buckley/Vidal debates, and their historical context and relevance today, in a moderated conversation led by Timothy Crimmins. At a time of deep division, it’s worth asking: Has there ever been civil discourse in America?
This event will feature a short screening from the Buckley/Vidal debates, followed by a discussion and Q&A.

A re-staging of the infamous "Pigasus" press conference held at what is now Daley Plaza on August 23, 1968, in which the Yippies nominated a pig for the president of United States. This moment of political theater set off almost a week of political unrest and remains a key memory of the counterculture. Fifty years later, "Pigasus" flies again in a live theatrical event that uses the 1969 Chicago Eight trial as a frame for re-examining this story and the benefits and limits of using theater, performance, and disruption to effect political change. With musician Bill MacKay as musician and Yippie Phil Ochs; City of Chicago historian Tim Samuelson as Judge Julius Hoffman; National Lawyers Guild lawyer Jerry Boyle as defense attorney William Kunstler; author Pat Thomas as Tom Foran; artist Dmitry Samarov as magazine artist Franklin McMahon; Petunia the Pig as Pigasus; and Judy Gumbo and other witnesses of 1968 as themselves.

The Shacks
There are precisely two moments when THE SHACKS will stop you dead in your tracks. The first comes when you hear their music, a seductively dreamy blend of early rock, vintage soul, and intimately hushed vocals that seem to float out weightlessly from the ether. The second comes when you see the band and realize that the artists behind these captivating sounds are, in fact, barely out of high school.
Fronted by 20-year-old singer/bassist Shannon Wise and 21-year-old guitarist/producer Max Shrager, THE SHACKS are already well on their way to becoming one of the year’s big breakouts, and their remarkable debut album, ‘Haze,’ solidifies their status as a band with ability to deliver on the well-deserved buzz. With a sound that’s somehow both retro and modern at once, their cinematic songs play out like the soundtrack to some long lost 16mm film, beckoning you into their grainy, saturated world of analog beauty. It’s as unique as it sounds, and in the short time that they’ve been together, THE SHACKS have already made an impressive mark.

About Slang:
A self-taught artist, Tyrue “Slang” Jones has been cultivating and innovating ideas reflected though his artwork for over 25 years. His wide array of styles, ranging from graffiti to fine art, has gained attention around the globe.
His signature style of “Figurative Graffiti,” recognized both nationally and internationally, combines flowing shapes and abstracted letterforms with traditional figure painting.
Roger Gastman, author of “The History Of American Graffiti” says, “SLANG single handedly defines the Chicago graffiti movement. For 30 years he has been a nonstop force pushing the limits of his art and teaching the history of the culture that he helped to create.”
He has worked as an established graffiti artist, fine artist, graphic designer, and professional television animator. His clients have included: Warner Bros. Animation Studios, Startoons Animation Studios, Walt Disney Interactive, General Mills, Universal Music, Def Jam, Interscope, Allstate, Leo Burnett and Viacom (MTV, VH1 and Nickelodeon).
The fusing of different genres of art has given his work an unmistakable originality and flair that is constantly evolving.
He is currently being the sole proprietor of the Gala Gallery, located in the West Town area of Chicago, IL.

James Prudhomme, better known as SUICIDEYEAR, is an American electronic composer, DJ, and songwriter from Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He’s released a collection of projects with Oneohtrix Point Never’s imprint Software Label Co, Brodinski’s Bromance and recently with LuckyMe. Recently he released the single "Spider Feet" featuring Swedish rapper Yung Lean. As a producer, he’s collaborated with a wide range of artists including Lean, Denzel Curry, Chynna, OG Maco and Bbymutha among others. Initially recognized for his unofficial remixes of artists such as Travis Porter, Future, and Three Six Mafia, over the years he’s been tapped to remix the likes of Jacques Greene, Mikky Ekko, Autre Ne Veut and more.
UK based artist CLARA LA SAN's music has been circulating the internet for a while, accumulating almost 1 million streams on Soundcloud and her long awaited debut tape Good Mourning (self released in 2017) garnering much attention. Her love of OSTs glisten through lip bitingly strong productions, which move with an ethereal thizz and lush weightlessness. She carries and guides us through her world with whispy vocals and sweet yet confident, confessional hooks. Even her razor-sharp uptempo tracks bear a sense of longing and a truthfully romantic appeal which conveys intimacy through honest human emotion.
Stopping by to DJ the heat is JEREMIAH MEECE, who wears many sonic hats: THE-DRUM, JODY, VALIS, & CLIQUE TALK among them. His projects have always taken elements of both deep R&B cuts and mainstream pop and run them through a spaced-out, psychedelic filter. Mmmm, yes. Very nice.
This exhibition brings together five Chicago artists who share the communication style of angst, frustration and disappointment of living in modern society. The exhibition is built around the theme of “punk” expression, which not only embraces aggression, violence and nihilism, but also self-reliance, DIY aesthetic and humor. Artists in this show do not try to create “punk art,” rather they approach the subject with the same attitude as youth in punk bands around the world. Visuals are harsh, and to the point, with sharp edges, and high contrasts. The use of these elements includes anti-design and ugly aesthetics –visual manifestations of punk’s brutal, discordant sound.

Artist Michael Rakowitz's seven-episode radio broadcast, Radio Silence, produced in Philadelphia, the birthplace of American democracy, was inspired by famed Iraqi broadcaster Bahjat Abdulwahed, who lived in the city as a refugee until his death in 2016. The project interweaves dreams and memories from Iraq, America, and in-between into a soundscape of the contemporary refugee experience, the Iraqi diaspora, and the culture of an Iraq, that due to war and political unrest, no longer exists.

Radio Silence is a large-scale project originally produced by Mural Arts Philadelphia, with artist Michael Rakowitz and curator Elizabeth Thomas, and launched with a large-scale performance on Independence Mall in Historic Philadelphia that was simulcast on PhillyCAM TV.
About Michael Rakowitz:
Michael Rakowitz (b. 1973, New York) is an artist living and working in Chicago. In 1998 he initiated paraSITE, an ongoing project in which the artist custom builds inflatable shelters for homeless people that attach to the exterior outtake vents of a building’s heating, ventilation, or air conditioning system. His work has appeared in venues worldwide including dOCUMENTA (13), P.S.1, MoMA, MassMOCA, Castello di Rivoli, the 16th Biennale of Sydney, the 10th Istanbul Biennial, Sharjah Biennial 8, Tirana Biennale, National Design Triennial at the Cooper-Hewitt, and Transmediale 05. He has had solo exhibitions at Tate Modern in London, Lombard Freid Gallery in New York, Alberto Peola Arte Contemporanea in Torino, and Kunstraum Innsbruck. His public project, Return, was presented by Creative Time in New York in 2006. He is the recipient of a 2012 Tiffany Foundation Award; a 2008 Creative Capital Grant; a Sharjah Biennial Jury Award; a 2006 New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship Grant in Architecture and Environmental Structures; the 2003 Dena Foundation Award, and the 2002 Design 21 Grand Prix from UNESCO. His solo exhibition, The worst condition is to pass under a sword which is not one’s own was on view at Tate Modern in London in 2010. A new commission for SALT in Istanbul premiered in November 2011. Rakowitz was commissioned by Creative Time in 2011 for his project, Spoils, a culinary intervention at New York City’s Park Avenue restaurant that invited diners to eat off of plates looted from Saddam Hussein’s palaces. The project culminated in the repatriation of the former Iraqi President’s flatware to the Republic of Iraq at the behest of current Prime Minister Nuri Al Maliki on December 15, 2011—the date Coalition Forces left Iraq. Enemy Kitchen (2003-ongoing) is a food truck serving Iraqi food to Chicago’s hungry public, staffed by veterans of the Iraq War working under Iraqi refugee chefs. Another recent project, The Breakup, was first presented by Al Ma’mal Foundation for Contemporary Art in Jerusalem in October 2010, and was exhibited at Rhona Hoffman Gallery in Chicago in 2014. He is currently working on a new commission for the 14th Istanbul Biennial. Rakowitz is Professor of Art Theory and Practice at Northwestern University and is represented by Rhona Hoffman Gallery, Chicago; Jane Lombard Gallery, New York; and Barbara Wien Galerie in Berlin.

When the four members of Canadian post-punk band PREOCCUPATIONS wrote and recorded their new record, they were in a state of near total instability. Years-long relationships ended; they left homes behind. Frontman Matt Flegel, guitarist Danny Christiansen, multi-instrumentalist Scott Munro and drummer Mike Wallace all moved to different cities. They resolved to change their band name, but hadn’t settled on a new one. And their road-tested, honed approach to songwriting was basically thrown out the window. This time, they walked into the studio with the gas gauge near empty, buoyed by one another while the rest of their lives were virtually unrecognizable and rootless. There was no central theme or idea to guide the band’s collective cliff jump. As a result, ‘Preoccupations’ bears the visceral, personal sound of holding onto some steadiness in the midst of changing everything.
Toronto-based "Industrial surf-gaze" monsters ODONIS ODONIS are returning after their last show in 2015 with experimental psych weirdos ICE BALLOONS. Born out the same DIY scene that spawned METZ, HSY, GREYS and more, this trio cut their teeth at the now defunct Buzz Garage, where they built a solid foundation as a crushing live band. Their 2014 Polaris-nominated album, Hard Boiled Soft Boiled, found ODONIS ODONIS pushing the sonic envelope into new territory, because much like the hypnotic spiral that came to be associated with the band’s earlier efforts, these fellas don't follow a linear path. The band's live show is the point where the diverging influences and hypnotic visual aesthetic collide into something that is maddeningly stunning -- don't miss it.
ANTELOPER is the electric brain child of JAIMIE BRANCH (fly or die, high life) and JASON NAZARY (little women, helado negro, bear in heaven). Branch and Nazary have been playing together as trumpeter and drummer for years, since meeting at the New England Conservatory of Music in 2002, but in this duo both musicians include synthesizers to push further into the spectral space ship ether. With deep rhythmic passages, telepathic improvisations and effortless melodic negotiations, Anteloper pushes forward, swinging it's horns all the while.
