When the four members of Canadian post-punk band PREOCCUPATIONS wrote and recorded their new record, they were in a state of near total instability. Years-long relationships ended; they left homes behind. Frontman Matt Flegel, guitarist Danny Christiansen, multi-instrumentalist Scott Munro and drummer Mike Wallace all moved to different cities. They resolved to change their band name, but hadn’t settled on a new one. And their road-tested, honed approach to songwriting was basically thrown out the window. This time, they walked into the studio with the gas gauge near empty, buoyed by one another while the rest of their lives were virtually unrecognizable and rootless. There was no central theme or idea to guide the band’s collective cliff jump. As a result, ‘Preoccupations’ bears the visceral, personal sound of holding onto some steadiness in the midst of changing everything.
Toronto-based "Industrial surf-gaze" monsters ODONIS ODONIS are returning after their last show in 2015 with experimental psych weirdos ICE BALLOONS. Born out the same DIY scene that spawned METZ, HSY, GREYS and more, this trio cut their teeth at the now defunct Buzz Garage, where they built a solid foundation as a crushing live band. Their 2014 Polaris-nominated album, Hard Boiled Soft Boiled, found ODONIS ODONIS pushing the sonic envelope into new territory, because much like the hypnotic spiral that came to be associated with the band’s earlier efforts, these fellas don't follow a linear path. The band's live show is the point where the diverging influences and hypnotic visual aesthetic collide into something that is maddeningly stunning -- don't miss it.
ANTELOPER is the electric brain child of JAIMIE BRANCH (fly or die, high life) and JASON NAZARY (little women, helado negro, bear in heaven). Branch and Nazary have been playing together as trumpeter and drummer for years, since meeting at the New England Conservatory of Music in 2002, but in this duo both musicians include synthesizers to push further into the spectral space ship ether. With deep rhythmic passages, telepathic improvisations and effortless melodic negotiations, Anteloper pushes forward, swinging it's horns all the while.
