Don't Call Me Sweetheart Holiday Spectacular

Don't Call Me Sweetheart Holiday Spectacular

Sunday December 20th • 6PM

Co-Prosperity Sphere • 3219 S Morgan St

$12 suggested donation

"The Don't Call Me Sweetheart! Show" takes time out from its regular schedule for the Christmas Extravaganza, a two-hour show live with a studio audience (you!). A donation of $12 gets one a warm beverage or a baked good, with proceeds going to Lumpen Radio - a local non-profit radical radio station in Chicago (on 105.5 FM) that showcases innovative ideas, plays highly curated music, and broadcasts commentary on the issues of our day. Additional beverages and baked goods with be available. Local artists will be also be selling select wares to fulfill your holiday shopping needs.

“The Don’t Call Me Sweetheart! Show” is the sound of Pop Rocks spiraling down your ear canal and lodging in your brain. Award winning creators Stephen Sonneveld and Andrew Gregory Krzak resurrect the long dormant conventions of the radio play, mix them with equal parts satire, drama, humor and pathos, and then throw in a touch of audio verite. This concoction is then peppered with texture and slathered with cadence before it is left to cure in the sizzle of your amplifier. "Christmas Extravaganza" imagines what it would be like if George Bailey really, truly wasn't born, explores the chapel-silent moments of fresh fallen snow and attempts to solve the mystery of who that guy is dressed as Santa if the guy hired to play Santa was caught in traffic on the way over.

Our very special treat will be live music from Foiled Again, a trio formed in 2001 by Rob Lindley, Allison Bazarko and Anne Sheridan Smith. Foiled Again has been bringing their own brand of covers and originals to audiences in Chicago and Midwest for almost 15 years. They have celebrated jazz, 60's pop, country, Americana, rock and folk music with their covers of Joni Mitchell, Randy Newman, Crosby Stills Nash, Harold Arlen, Burt Bacharach, and Carole King - to name a few. Their smart arrangements and tight harmonies have been been enjoyed many times at many local theaters and concert spaces including Davenport's Piano Bar, where they will sing again on Dec. 12 and Evanston SPACE, where they return Dec. 14. highlight their recent album, Blanket of Winter.

The People's Place: Soul Food Restaurants and Reminiscences from the Civil Rights Era to Today

Noted Chicago writer and WGN 720 AM "Nocturnal Journal" radio host Dave Hoekstra celebrates the release of his latest book "The People's Place: Soul Food Restaurants and Reminiscences from the Civil Rights Era to Today" on Friday, December 18 @ Co-Prosperity Sphere (3219-21 S Morgan St, Chicago, IL 60607) between 6 - 9 PM.

Dave was a 29 year veteran of the Chicago Sun-Times (he recently left his post in a buyout in 2014) and is considered a consummate newsman, oral historian, archivist and storyteller in the grand tradition of New Yorker writer Joseph Mitchell ("Up In the Old Hotel"). In 2013, he won two Peter Lisagor Awards from the Chicago Headline Club and a Studs Terkel Community Media Award from the Community Media Workshop. On his 25th anniversary at the Sun-Times in 2010, Hoekstra told radio columnist Robert Feder, “Basically what keeps me going is the ability to make the unknown known. I love the sense of adventure and discovery that comes in our jobs. Always tell students about the Jimmy Breslin at JFK gravesite story — to paraphrase — how everyone flocked around the gravesite; Breslin wandered off in the distance to interview the gravedigger. That’s kind of how I approach my job. Don’t know how much of that remains in fashion, but I try to fight the good fight.”

The People's Place: Soul Food Restaurants and Reminiscences from the Civil Rights Era to Today:

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. loved the fried catfish and lemon icebox pie at Memphis’s Four Way restaurant. Beloved nonagenarian chef Leah Chase introduced George W. Bush to baked cheese grits and scolded Barack Obama for putting Tabasco sauce on her gumbo at New Orleans’s Dooky Chase’s. When SNCC leader Stokely Carmichael asked Ben’s Chili Bowl owners Ben and Virginia Ali to keep the restaurant open during the 1968 Washington, DC, riots, they obliged, feeding police, firefighters, and student activists as they worked together to quell the violence.

Celebrated former Chicago Sun-Times columnist Dave Hoekstra unearths these stories and hundreds more as he travels, tastes, and talks his way through twenty of America’s best, liveliest, and most historically significant soul food restaurants. Following the “soul food corridor” from the South through northern industrial cities, The People’s Place gives voice to the remarkable chefs, workers, and small business owners (often women) who provided sustenance and a safe haven for civil rights pioneers, not to mention presidents and politicians; music, film, and sports legends; and countless everyday, working-class people.

Featuring lush photos, mouth-watering recipes, and ruminations from notable regulars such as the Rev. Jesse Jackson, jazz legend Ramsey Lewis, Little Rock Nine member Minnijean Brown, and many others, The People’s Place is an unprecedented celebration of soul food, community, and oral history.

Details on the event:

This special event will feature the launch of the Chicago exhibit of Paul Natkin portraits from The People's Place. Paul has been one of the most sought-out portrait and music documentary photographers and has contributed to such publications as CREEM Magazine, Rolling Stone, Time, Newsweek, People, Playboy, Ebony and many others. His photographs have also been used by many local indie labels including Alligator, Delmark and Blind Pig. In 1988, he accompanied Keith Richards on his Xpensive Wino Tour which resulted in further work as tour photographer for the Rolling Stones. He recently had an exhibit of his massive portfolio at the Chicago Cultural center and is personally involved with various charity work including Farm Aid and Rock For Reading. He has previously worked with Dave Hoekstra on 2013's "The Supper Club Book: A Celebration of a Midwest". Tradition

Gospel crate digger William Luck will be spinning rare gospel records that reflect the civil rights movement.

William has recently released the LP "Saved And Sanctified: Songs Of The Jade Label" with the locally-based Numero Group label. According to their web site the album features . . .

"The rawest DIY gospel ever resurrected. The West Side of Chicago was just an annex of the deep rural South for Gene Autry Cash and his flock of recent Old Dominion transplants looking to cut their fiery, unadorned sounds indelibly to plastic. His Jade label absorbed those God-fearing artists: family bands with wailing children and barely amateur groups sourced from local parishes, infused with reverberations of country and western and deep soul. Glinting authenticity shines from every track like a diamond in the unpolished rough—each group completely convinced that salvation comes through song."

Opening reception, 6-9 p.m. Dec. 18 at Co-Prosperity Sphere, 3219 S. Morgan. Free. After party with Joe Bryl spinning soul at Maria's Packaged Goods & Community Bar, 960 W. 31st.

Photo exhibit curated by Liz Williams, Southern Food and Beverage Museum, New Orleans. DJ William Luck music and reception broadcast live on Lumpen Radio (105.5 FM)

(re)Working Architecture

Friday - Sunday October 30th - November 1st

Co-Prosperity Sphere, 3219-21 S. Morgan St.

Over Halloween weekend, the Architecture Lobby will create an uninvited Chicago Biennial installation consisting of scenarios depicting the absurdities of architectural practice/labor/work. We seek to expand the current conversation about architecture to include an actionable critique of the real, often tragic circumstances that precarious creative workers face on a daily basis. Through performances that engage Lobby members, sympathizers, and the audience we aim to generate new perspectives and possibilities for action on topics ranging from unpaid internships, the mystification of the role of the architect, and how we conceive of the value of our work.

We're back with another awesome set of comics.

Nobody has been more impressive as consistently as Dwayne Kennedy. He's not only one of the funniest performers around, he's also humbly brilliant. His credits are too numerous to name, he has simply been everywhere. We are really excited that we're able to have him on the show.

It is impossible to watch Lara Beitz perform and not be taken aback by her talent. She is consistently able to turn personal battles into something comedically special. Her stand-up is featured on RooftopComedy.com, Pandora, Spotify, and Amazon. Really wonderful.

Check out Dwayne (seriously, you should):

Lumpen #126 The Comics Issue Release Party

Lumpen #126 Comics Issue release party/art show

Friday October 9th

7-11PM

FREE

Presenting the third annual all-comics issue of Lumpen magazine, including comic work by groundbreaking local and international artists. This issue has a loose theme of "Radio" which correlates to the launch 105.5 WLPN, which is a brand new non-commercial radio station based out of Bridgeport that will showcase underground and innovative programming and feature distinctly curated music from a variety of genres as well as cultural commentary, not unlike the variety of comics and artists in Lumpen magazine.

With comics by:
David Alvarado, Sharmila Banerjee, Nate Beaty, Ben Bertin, Kevin Budnik, Andy Burkholder, Jessica Campbell, Danielle Chenette, Mark Connery, Krystal Difronzo, Margaux Duseigneur, Edie Fake, Sarah Ferrick, Leif Goldberg, Keith Herzik, Andrew Holmquist, Clay Hickson, Lyra Hill, Emily Hutchings, Juliacks, Blaise Larmee, Sarah Leitten, Ben Marcus, Marieke McClendon, Ian Mcduffie, Max Morris, Paul Nudd, Onsmith, Jason Overby, George Porteus, Grant Reynolds, Eric Rivera, Aaron Renier, Joe Tallarico, Mike Taylor, Matthew Thurber, Tim Tvedt, Two Tone Comix, Lale Westvind, Gina Wynbrandt, Leslie Wiebeler, Mickey Zachilli

There will also be an art exhibition including many contributors to the issue as well as music provided by:

Wet Wallet: Until the massive pile of "funny books" on the night stand crushes them in their sleep, Wet Wallet, a duo, will make music that sounds like a deep fried snake with butter gloved fingers drenched in chrome.

Oscillator Bug: Oscillator Bug is like a force of nature in the age of climate change: unpredictable. Borrowing from the revolution-minded mass hallucinations of 60s psych as well as weirdo bedroom pop and several decades worth of avant-garde synth experimentalism, Oscillator Bug is a wild, infectious and occasionally disturbing rendering of 21st Century popular music.

Copies of the magazine and refreshments will be available at the opening.

About the host Mitch Nathan:

Mitch Nathan was raised in the dangerous suburb of Hoffman Estates, he then moved to the safe streets of Chicago where he served tables because he stunk at selling crack and playing basketball. He now does standup comedy, and sometimes serves tables.

Bike Smut Film Festival

Bike Smut June 12th 2015 8:30 pm

Cover: $7-15 Sliding Scale (no one turned away for lack of funds)
ADULTS ONLY

Time for more exploitation of your transportation; it's our 8th year of radical, queer, DIY bike porn!

ONE NIGHT ONLY

Bike Smut is a collection of erotic bicycle shorts made by cyclists, radicals, and queers from all over the world -various interpretations about what is great about sex and cycling!

Last year we showed forced haircuts from Chicago, golden showers and swampy dendrophilia from Gainesville, greasy cock-and-ball torture from Berlin, spaghetti-western anarchists from Montreal, gender-queer Mario Brothers from Geneva, hardfem, bicycle-mounted, cavalry-archers hunting to feed their sexual appetites in Phoenix, and a hardcore, ginger-on-ginger bisexual, bikesexual educational film.

WHEW! Its been a good year!

This year the submissions are from Oakland, Chicago, Phoenix, Montreal, Toronto and for the first time ever we have a film made in South America... San Palo!

The "Come Again" theme has inspired bicycle lap dances, Craigslist hookups, androgynous ice cave explorations, Chinese bondage pegging lessons, bike cops taken hostage until they squirt and wheelchair porn!

This synthesis of transportation and sexuality is everything you could imagine it to be: creative, ethical, aware, explicit, tantalizing, candid, and silly! Since its inception, Bike Smut has toured North America 17 times, and in the summer of 2011 the project completed its first European excursion, playing 63 shows in 21 countries, from Scotland to Turkey. The winter of 2012 took Bike Smut on their first around Mexico. Last year Reverend Phil had completed a bike tour from Minneapolis to Montreal to Mexico - 6 months of bike touring across Europe and another month down the West Coast. Now after a year of bike touring he is taking the bus to Chicago.

This is the only screening of Bike Smut 8 in Illinois.

The Bike Smut Film Festival is now in its 8th year, and the only way to see it is to attend a screening and experience it with others.

Southside Projects presents: Stop Making Nonsense: Japanese Surrealist Films, 1960-1964

When: Thursday, June 4 at 7pm
Where: Co-Prosperity Sphere, 3219 S. Morgan
How much: Free

Tokyo in the early 1960s was a breeding ground for a new wave of Japanese avant-garde art. This program surveys the landscape of experimental cinema in Japan during this moment, including films that were made by members of the famous “Group of Three” and the Nihon University cinema club. Nobuhiko Ôbayashi’s Complexe (1964, 15 min., 16mm) centers on a man whose mundane walkabout metamorphoses into a surreal dreamscape in which manic pace of modernity is channeled via stop-motion animation and erratic editing techniques. To quote Donald Richie: “If there is any such thing as a popular avant-garde film, this 1964 picture is it.” Made with the Nihon University cinema club, Motoharu Jonouchi’s Pou Pou (1960, 22 min., 16mm) blurs the line between life and death as a group of children perform a burial ritual in an attempt to escape the monotony of quotidian existence. Takahiko Iimura’s Ai (Love; 1962, 10 min., 16mm) features erotic close-ups of fragmented body parts with sound by Yoko Ono, and Jonas Mekas likened it to Stan Brakhage’s Loving and Jack Smith’s Flaming Creatures. Directed by Nobuhiko Ôbayashi in collaboration with surrealist painter Kazutomo Fujino, An Eater (1963, 24 min., 16mm) is a grotesque (and graphic) comedy about cannibalism. The film foreshadows the fusion of slapstick gags and macabre humor that would come to define Ôbayashi’s 1977 masterpiece Hausu (House).

Post-screening discussion with programmer Harrison Sherrod and SAIC graduate student Kara Jefts, who will situate the films in the larger context of Japanese avant-garde art in the 20th century.

Sponsored by the Center for East Asian Studies at the University of Chicago.

All of our programs are supported in part by a grant from The MacArthur Funds for Arts & Culture at the Richard H. Driehaus Foundation.

Studs Rules: A People’s ShortDoc Election Event

"If I did one thing I'm proud of, it's to make people feel that together, they count,” said the legendary Studs Terkel.

We hope you’ll join us to make your voice heard! Hosted by Re:sound’s Gwen Macsai, this evening will celebrate the finalists of this year’s ShortDocs Challenge, which invited anyone and everyone to produce short audio stories inspired by Studs’ mighty curiosity. Join us to listen to the candidates – by turns delightful and heartbreaking – weigh their merits, vote for your favorite, and leave with an “I voted!” sticker (of course).

Special guests will include our partners at the Studs Terkel Radio Archive from WFMT and outstanding ShortDocs producers from the Chicago area. Arrive at 6pm for food trucks and drinks, stay to mingle, debate, and fill out your ballot.

The event is hosted in partnership with Lumpen Radio and Public Media Institute – thank you!

Opening Reception Friday, May 15, 6-10pm.

Version Festival 15: Turbo Butcher Comedy Show

Wednesday • April 29  8pm
Turbo Butcher Comedy Show
Co-Prosperity Sphere • 3219 S Morgan St
Admission: $5

Featuring: Mitch Nathan, Keegan Buckingham, Nigel Ng, Jeff Scheen, & Anthony Bonazzo
In the spirit and tradition of live comedy radio we asked our favorite comedian, Mitch Nathan, to round up some real good talent. We will be airing the show live with our fingers on the "dump button" all night long.

About the Comedians:

Nigel Ng (pronounced ‘UHng’) grew up in Malaysia, a country where it’s common for babies to be given British first names. He came to America in 2010 for college. In his standup, Nigel talks about his home country quite a bit — that’s where he spent the first 19 years of his life. He details his experiences as a foreign-born person trying to assimilate to this new culture while retaining a sense of self. His unique, multinational experiences give him an original point of view, but it’s his way of making himself relatable that has earned him spots at all the major comedy clubs in Chicago. Nigel frequently performs at Zanies, the Laugh Factory, and the Comedy Bar. He also produces “This Week’s Show”, one of Chicago’s most successful independent comedy s

Keegan Buckingham will tickle your ribs and massage your teeth. His unique blend of highbrow and lowbrow humor earned him a Funniest Person in Iowa award and a spot on the writing staff of Second City's Midnight Parade. He puts the "real" in "that guy's real funny."

Mitch Nathan was raised in the dangerous suburb of Hoffman Estates, he then moved to the safe streets of Chicago where he served tables because he stunk at selling crack and playing basketball. He now does standup comedy, and sometimes serves tables.

Anthony Bonazzo is a Stand Up Comedian, Improviser and Actor living in Chicago. Anthony’s Stand Up comedy is poignant, yet light hearted: a blend of social humor mixed with personal stories recounting unusual but always entertaining anecdotes. He is known for his spot on impersonations, high energy delivery and veteran presence on stage. Originally a New Jersey native, and one of eight children, Anthony began his lifelong pursuit of comedy doing imitations of family members at the dinner table. He can be seen performing Stand Up and Improv in various venues throughout Chicago.
