This is Bate Bola: Ben LaMar Gay & Africans With Mainframes

Chicago premiere party

tickets $10 advance // $12 at door

"THIS IS BATE BOLA" is a new short film by BEIJA FILMS (aka Brazil & London based filmmakers Ben Holman & Neirin Jones), the team behind "The Good Fight," a 2017 Tribeca Film Fest award winner for Best Short Documentary. As with The Good Fight, the setting for This Is Bate Bola is the underrepresented, oftentimes marginalized outskirts of Rio de Janeiro. This breathtaking new suite of moving pictures is a first time document of “Bate Bola” – an explosively colorful Carnival tradition not known to many people outside of its community, even throughout Brazil, where media coverage often misrepresents it as a purely violent and frightening phenomenon as opposed to the joyfully expressive celebration that it is.

The Chicago premiere party for This Is Bate Bola takes place at Co-Prosperity Sphere on March 23rd. Along with a screening of the 15 minute film and an exhibition of photographs taken by director Neirin Jones (an insight into the last decade of Rio’s Bate Bola culture, bringing us right up to this years Carnival celebration), there will be a live set by Soul Jazz Records-signed, Chicago-based analog hardware / acid house artist AFRICANS WITH MAINFRAMES (through Chicago’s own legendary, gargantuan Royal Hands sound system), and...

...there will be a live music performance by Chicago's own BEN LAMAR GAY – who met Ben & Neirin of Beija Films when living in Rio de Janeiro in 2007, and has since produced film scores for both The Good Fight and This Is Bate Bola. For this performance Ben LaMar Gay will do interpretations of music he composed for "This Is Bate Bola" with singer Dill Costa, electronics/synth player Alex Inglizian, and drummer Carlos Pride.

To open the night, Royal Hands founder / Soul Summit honcho DAVE MATA will spin vinyl alongside DANIEL VILLARREAL-CARRILLO (of International Anthem artist Dos Santos).
